Playing career started in hometown Ottawa with the 1927-28 Montagnards ... First season in the NHL was 1929-30 (four goals, two assists for the Ottawa Senators in 38 games) ... As a Senator, Wally was overshadowed by older brother Hec “Hurricane” Kilrea ... “Hurricane,” a left wing, had his best NHL season in 1929-30 (placed fifth in the NHL scoring race with 36 goals and 22 assists) ... Wally was loaned to the London Panthers in late January for three games, then returned to Ottawa and had a stand-out game in Pittsburgh on February 4, 1930, when he scored three times in Ottawa’s 5-1 win … Loaned (some sources say traded) to the Quakers on November 6, 1930 with Allen Shields and Syd Howe for $35,000 … Kilrea, then age 21, played in all 44 Quaker games, scoring eight goals and getting 12 assists ... Was one of his best NHL seasons (eclipsed only by his eight goals and 13 assists in 47 games for the Stanley Cup champion 1936-37 Detroit Red Wings) … Scored the first goal in Quakers history (unassisted) on November 16, 1930 in Philadelphia’s 5-1 loss to Detroit ... Stan Baumgartner of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote that Kilrea, along with Allen Shields and Syd Howe, were youngsters with “the fight, spirit and dash that the old-timers have not” … The Toronto Star called Kilrea and Syd Howe “tricky and fast”…Assisted on the last Quakers goal (scored by Gerry Lowrey) in the Quakers’ final game on March 21, 1931 … Wally was second oldest of three brothers who played in the NHL … Older brother Hec had a 15-year career with Ottawa, Detroit, and Toronto … Ken Kilrea, almost 10 years younger than Wally, spent five seasons with the Red Wings ... Nephew Brian Kilrea was briefly up with the Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings ... New York Americans claimed Wally from the Ottawa Senators (who had loaned him to the Quakers a year earlier) in dispersal draft, September 26, 1931 ... Played 48 games for the Americans in 1931-32 (three goals, eight assists) ... Later played for the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, Montreal Maroons, and Detroit Red Wings, as well as the IHL Windsor Bulldogs and Detroit Olympics ... For Detroit, scored two goals, two assists in the 1935-36 playoffs, and two assists in the 1936-37 playoffs to help the Wings become the first U.S.-based team to win back-to-back Cups … Last played in NHL with the 1937-38 Detroit Red Wings (no goals or assists in five games) ... Then returned to Pennsylvania, playing for the Pittsburgh Hornets and Hershey Bears … Last year as a player: 1943-44, with the AHL Hershey Bears (15 goals, 30 assists); ex-Quaker “Bud” Jarvis was a teammate ... Kilrea was an offensive player with fine defensive skills.
