Second-oldest Quaker (Herb Drury was oldest) … Career got its start with the OIHA Hamilton Tigers in 1918-19 … Next played for OCHL Ottawa teams before he joined the Pittsburgh Yellow Jackets for exhibition games at the close of the 1922-23 season … Teamed up nicely with defenseman Lionel Conacher, the legendary “Big Train” … Press reports say Conacher and Smith broke up enemy scoring rushes and completed some of their own … Totaled nine goals and two assists with the Yellow Jackets in 1923-24 … Smith and Conacher stayed in Pittsburgh when the Yellow Jackets became the NHL Pirates … Smith with the Pirates in all five of their seasons, rarely missing a game … Scored nine goals and was credited with one assist in the 1925-26 regular season, and scored a goal in the Pirates’ playoff series with the Maroons … Credited with the first hat trick in Pirates history when he scored three goals versus the Boston Bruins on January 15, 1926, in Pittsburgh’s 5-1 win at Duquesne Garden … Conacher was traded to the New York Americans the following season … Smith’s offensive output in 1926-27 fell back to four goals and no assists and continued to decline … Led the 1929-30 Pirates that season in penalty minutes, with 65 … At age 34, played in nine games as a Quaker but did not collect any goals, assists, or penalty minutes … Joined “Tex” White in a return to Pittsburgh when the Quakers traded them to the IHL Yellow Jackets for cash on December 16, 1930 … Smith played 26 games for the Yellow Jackets in 1930-31 (one goal, no assists) and 23 games for the Chicoutimi Carabins of the ECHL in 1931-32 (six goals, 10 assists), and then retired … Died on January 31, 1935 at age 38 when his car stalled on his way back to Ottawa, and in the harsh winter weather he developed a chill that worsened to pneumonia.
