One website says Coulson was born in 1904, rather than the commonly reported 1908 … Was an heir to millions. The Philadelphia Inquirer said Coulson’s father headed the National Breweries. Other sites report the family was active in the hotel business in Ontario and Quebec. … An all-around athlete, who made good in football as an amateur and was also active in golf, squash, skiing, and tennis … Got his start in hockey with Loyola College and the St. Michael’s Majors of the OHA-Jr. League (1926-27) ... Playing for the Ottawa Shamrocks of the OCHL (1927-1930) and Chicago Shamrocks of the USAHA (briefly in 1929), Coulson amassed 112 penalty minutes … Was noted as a defenseman of ability who led many rushes … But was also known for spending too much time in the penalty box when he could have helped his team more on the ice … Signed with the Quakers as a free agent on December 15, 1930 … After watching Coulson play against the Montreal Maroons, the Philadelphia Bulletin said he was "somewhat awkward" on the ice and not a "finished skater" or "past master in handling the stick," but the best player around for "hoisting" a man - Racked up 103 penalty minutes in only 28 games to lead the Quakers in that category … Came in third in penalty minutes for the NHL behind Harvey Rockburn of the Detroit Falcons (118 minutes in 42 games) and Eddie Shore of the Boston Bruins (105 minutes in 44 games) … Coulson would have totaled about 160 minutes had he played all 44 games and kept up his penalty pace … Referred to as a “millionaire kid” in the press … Known for taking and giving out body checks … Was not credited with any goals or assists … Frequently anchored the Quakers defense with Allen Shields, number two man in penalty minutes on the Quakers (98 total) … Coulson’s time with the Quakers represented his only NHL experience … Sources disagree on what became of him at the time the Quaker franchise was suspended ... Newspaper accounts say Coulson was claimed by the Montreal Maroons in dispersal draft of September 26, 1931 (not loaned to the Maroons on September 12, as other sources say) … Was listed in two late 1931 Maroons newspaper lineups, but no evidence that he ever played as a Maroon … After a three-year retirement from hockey (1931-34), played nine games for the Ottawa RCAF Flyers (1934-1936) … Headed Coulson Enterprises, the family business, after he retired from hockey, and was very active in hotel ownership.
